Obituary

Church Point, LA: A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Guidry Funeral Home in Church Point, LA for Kathleen "Kathy" Matte,72, the former Mary Kathleen Carriere. Mrs. Matte, a native of Church Point and resident of St. Landry Parish (Prairie Ronde, LA), died Tuesday evening, April 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital; Lafayette, LA. Deacon Byrne Winn will conduct the service with interment following in the Monsignor Bienvenu Cemetery on Hwy 35 north of Church Point.

Survivors include her mother, Stella Bellard Carriere; her daughters, Dayna Matte Dupre (Joseph Scott) and Athena Matte Breaux (Michael)-all of Prairie Ronde; a son, James Wayne Matte II (Devonie) of Prairie Ronde; 3 sisters: Carolyn Forrestier of Scott, LA and Shepril Primeaux and Shana Doucet-both of Church Point; 3 brothers: David Carriere (Brenda) of Church Point and John Carriere (Katrina) and Shecky Carriere (Tammy)-all of Lafayette; 5 grandchildren: Hunter James Dupre, Abigail Elizabeth and Isabella Claire "Foxy" Breaux and James Wayne III and Patrick Lysander Matte and a great uncle, Lloyd Bellard of Church Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wayne Matte; a daughter, Amanda Elizabeth Matte; her father, Joseph Leander Carriere and a sister, Georgia Carriere Stelly.

Kathy, a devoted wife, sister, mother, and grandmother; spent her entire life caring for all of those around her. Extraordinarily talented, she excelled at everything she did. An avid gardener, she loved sharing the fruits of her labor. From baking homemade cakes, breads, jams, and sauces to sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and quilting; Kathy was a remarkable crafter. There was a never a hobby or chore that she did not tackle head-on. She loved learning and was well versed on a variety of topics. Kathy was a voracious reader who loved a good mystery novel. Living on the farm, she raised a variety of animals with her goats being her ultimate joy. She created her own line of goat milk soaps. Additionally, Kathy loved creating one-of-a-kind jewelry sets for her daughters, granddaughters, and other family members. She was exceedingly generous, kind and loving. Kathy loved her grandchildren and enjoyed doting on them daily. She excelled in the kitchen making delicious meals for her family. There was literally nothing that she could not do.

The family requested that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home from 9:00 AM until the time of services. A recitation of the Rosary will be held there at 2:30 PM by Deacon Byrne Winn. Pallbearers will be James Matte II, Scott and Hunter Dupre, Michael Breaux, Matthew Primeaux, Dusty Carriere and John and Shecky Carriere with Lloyd Bellard as honorary pall bearer.
