Church Point, LA: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM Friday September 17, 2021 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point, LA for James "Bert" Venable, 85. Mr. Venable, a native and current resident of Higginbotham, LA, passed away Monday, September 13 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, LA. Father Brian Harrington, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant of the Mass and committal will be in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery adjacent to the church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Cormier Venable of Higginbotham; a son, James Bert Venable II of Woodlands, TX; his daughters: Francine Srubar and husband Michael of Crosby TX, Christina Malchar and husband Joseph of Montgomery, TX and Stephanie Coonan and husband Michael of Jacksonville, FL; his grandchildren: Floyd and Patricia Srubar, Marijean Martinez, Joseph "Joey" Malchar, Victoria Venable and Erin and Riley Coonan; his great-grandchildren: Avery, Santo and Jordan Martinez and a sister, Earline Daigle of Lake Arthur, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Davis and Lorena Johnson Venable; two sisters, Leberta "Toot" Comeaux and Gertrude Savoy and an infant brother, Gurvis Venable. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home from 9:00 AM Friday until the time of services. A rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 1:00 PM Friday by Father Harrington. Pallbearers will be Tommy Comeaux, Lowell Daigle, Floyd Srubar, Joey Malchar, AJ Matt and Wade Savoy. Retired after thirty-seven years of service with Brown and Root; Mr. Venable was an avid gardener and fisherman, served as an altar server and Eucharistic Minister and loved to cook and be with family and friends. He spent his childhood and teen years helping with the family's sweet potato and cotton farm and always fondly remembered being named a Church Point 4-H Sweet Potato King and traveling to Missouri to promote Louisiana yams. Guidry Funeral Home, 219 N. Broadway St., Church Point, LA is in charge of final arrangements.
