Church Point, La. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 22, 2010 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Church Point for Irene Martin, 91. Ms. Martin, a native and long-time resident of Bristol, La., died at 11:50 A.M. Thursday, February 18 at the Acadia-St. Landry Guest Home, Church Point. Monsignor Jefferson J. DeBlanc will conduct the services with interment following in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Church Point.
Survivors include a sister, Rita Martin Lambert of Bristol; a sister-in-law, Norma Miller Martin of Baton Rouge, La. and twenty-four nieces and nephews: Jack, Joan, Ada and John Burson and Sarah B. Clare, Carmen B. Daigle, Jean B. DeValcourt, Loretta B. Tauzin and Jim, John and Pat Bernard, Wayne and Blair Martin and Jeanne M. Driscoll, Carol M. Wesson and Grace M. Landry, William, Albert and Martin Lambert and Juliette L. Lastrapes, Theresa Lambert, Mary L. Schneider, Fern L. Carr and Phyllis L. Hymel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Camille and Ada Daigle Martin; three brothers, Weston, Emery, and infant Joseph Camille Martin; two sisters, Ivy Mae Martin Bernard and Gussie Martin Burson Miller; a niece, Mary Elizabeth Bernard and a nephew, Robert "Bobby" Burson.
The family requested that visiting hours be observed from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 21 and continue from 8:00 A.M. Monday until the time of the services. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday by Monsignor DeBlanc.
Miss Martin was primarily a care-giver, having nursed her mother, father and brother until their deaths. She was born in the home built by her grandfather and resided there all of her life. She was a teacher's aide at Bristol Elementary, Cankton Elementary, East Elementary and East Junior High Schools. She had a phenomenal memory and provided many useful facts, dates and anecdotes about her family history. She was the unofficial historian and consultant for family genealogical inquiries.
