Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 19, 2014 at St. Edmund Catholic Church for Harold J. Wingate, Sr., 80, who passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 3:28 pm at Acadia-St. Landry Hospital.

Fr. Greg Daigle, a personal friend of Mr. Wingate's family, will be the Celebrant of the Mass. Father Mike Champagne will be concelebrant. Lectors will be Ruthie W. Landry and Jenna C. Viator. Gift bearers will be Alexis Wingate, Alaina Hensgens, Annie Spell, Meghan Wingate and Mayme Suire. Altar servers will be Ben Viator and Cooper Wingate. Eucharistic ministers will be Percy John Wingate and Drew John Wingate. He will be honored with a flag presentation ceremony at the time of services.

Burial will take place in St. Edmund Cemetery.

Harold, a resident of Mire, LA was the son of the late Willie Wingate, Sr. and the former Amadine Perrodin.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Henrietta "Tuppy" Johnson Wingate of Church Point, LA; four sons, Phillip Keith Wingate and wife Joan Babineaux of Lafayette, LA, Marvin Charles Wingate and wife Andree Petitjean of Rougon, LA, Harold J. "Spike" Wingate, Jr. and wife Terry Leger of Rayne, LA and Eric Wingate and wife Julie Venable of Church Point, LA; one daughter, Paula Kaye Wingate Viator and husband Ray Anthony of Church Point, LA; one sister, Myrtle Wingate Lyons of Mire, LA; sixteen grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, David and James Paul Wingate; two brothers, Rodney Wingate and Willie Wingate, Jr.; and two sisters, Dorothy LeBlanc and Viola Wingate.

Mr. Wingate was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was an entrepreneur who had established Wingate House Moving in 1958 and successfully ran it until it was sold to his son Marvin in 1984. Mr. Harold was a member of St. Edmund Catholic Church in Branch and held many positions there. He was a Eucharistic Minister, usher and performed many duties in and around the church. He loved woodworking and generously gave of his handiwork to family and friends. The Pulpit and Baptismal Font, as well as many other articles in St. Edmund Chapel that he helped build, are a testament of his devotion to his church.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home on, Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm and continue on Friday from 8:00 am until the time of service. A rosary will be recited Thursday evening in the funeral home at 7:00 pm by his son Eric Wingate.

Pallbearers will be his sons, Phillip Keith, Marvin, Harold "Spike", Jr. and Eric Wingate, his son-in-law, Ray "Tony" Viator and his grandson, Jamie Wingate.
