Obituary

”Her hands cultivated the land, her heart nurtured her family, and her faith inspired a community.”

Genevieve Lyons, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family and the faith that guided her throughout her life.

She devoted her life to God, family, agriculture, and service. For 57 years, she shared an enduring marriage with Daniel Lyons. Together they built a successful farm and a life rooted in faith, hard work, hospitality, and community.Genevieve was a dairy farmer, cow-calf producer, hay producer, and row-crop farmer who never stood on the sidelines. She drove tractors, baled hay in the south Louisiana heat, milked cows, tended livestock, and helped manage every demand of the family operation. To her, agriculture was more than a livelihood—it was a calling and part of who she was. Through decades of work beside her husband and family, she modeled stewardship, perseverance, and faith. She often said, “It is my hope that our children learn to live with and appreciate the sustainable system that Louisiana has.” That conviction guided her work to educate consumers, inspire young people, and preserve Louisiana’s agricultural heritage. Her advocacy reached local, state, and national audiences. She served as President of the Louisiana Cattle Women’s Association, on the Louisiana Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, and on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, among other roles. With Daniel, she hosted Opelousas’s annual “Here’s the Beef” Cook-Off for more than 40 years. She welcomed thousands of schoolchildren for hands-on farm tours and promoted agriculture through radio, television, farm visits, and meetings across the country, becoming one of Louisiana agriculture’s most recognized and respected voices. Her home welcomed family, friends, farmworkers, and visitors from around the world. Her family hosted exchange students from Spain, Belgium, Germany, France, and across the United States, embracing each as their own and sharing the rhythms of a Louisiana dairy farm along with lessons in faith, service, and perseverance. Deeply proud of her Cajun heritage, she delighted in sharing its faith, family bonds, hospitality, food, stories, and French language. She believed preserving that heritage was among the greatest gifts she could pass to future generations. Her greatest pride was her family. As the mother of five children, she knew life’s richest blessings and its deepest sorrow when her son Eric died at age 11. Guided by her strong Catholic faith, she carried the memory of her son with her every day, but she taught those around her that joy and sorrow can coexist, and that faith can sustain us through life's most difficult moments. That quiet strength became one of her most enduring gifts to her family and to all who knew her. Through her example, she taught her family that life's hardships are not meant to stop us from living, loving, and serving others. Her resilience became one of her greatest lessons, demonstrating how faith and purpose can carry a family through even its darkest moments. She treasured her thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her home was filled with faith, laughter, food, warmth, and unconditional love, and every family member knew they were cherished. She also lovingly cared for her mother and mother-in-law, embodying the compassion, patience, and strength that defined her. Genevieve lived her Catholic faith through prayer, generosity, service, and trust in God’s plan. As a 4-H, FFA, FBLA, and Girl Scouts volunteer leader at local, regional, and state levels, she helped young people build character, confidence, and leadership. On the farm, generations of young men found a trusted adviser and motherly presence: she worked beside them, fed them homemade hamburgers, brought cold water, celebrated their successes, and guided them through difficult times. Many arrived as employees and left as family.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel; children Carmen (Todd) Fahrenthold, Barrett (Julie) Lyons, Monica (Jeff) Masson, and Bridget (Steven) Tarrant; grandchildren Brianna (Jesse) Kennemore, Emmerson Lyons, John Daniel Masson, Erica Fahrenthold, Julia Fahrenthold, Jackson Masson, Eli Lyons, Lauren Jane Masson, Joshua Fahrenthold, Ellie Lyons, Charles Tarrant, Daniel Tarrant, and Gianna Tarrant; great-grandchildren Theodore Kennemore and Genevieve Kennemore; sister Corinne Treuil; nephew Lawrence (Margaret) Treuil; nieces Nicole (Jim) LeMaire and Michelle (Bentley) Purvis; and host of great-nephews and great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lelias Delhomme; son, Eric Lyons; and nephew, John Treuil.

Genevieve showed others how to live with grace, integrity, resilience, and purpose. Her legacyendures in the family she loved, the meals and conversations shared around her island, the land she tended, the young people she encouraged, and the many lives she welcomed into her own. Her family finds comfort knowing she has heard the words she spent a lifetime striving to earn:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” —Matthew 25:23

The family is deeply grateful to her caregivers, Claudette Mouisset, Arlene Graves, and Debbie Prejean, and to the hospice nurses and staff who accompanied her final chapter. Their compassion and respect allowed her to remain surrounded by love and comfort, and helped herfamily navigate this time with grace and peace. May God bless them for the important work they do.
