Church Point, La. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point, LA for Evelyn Fontenot, 96, the former Evelyn Breaux. Mrs. Fontenot, a native of Crowley, LA and long-time resident of Church Point, died Wednesday morning, November 11 at Acadia-St. Landry Guest Home in Church Point. Monsignor Jefferson J. DeBlanc will conduct the services with entombment following in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Mausoleum adjacent to the church.
Survivors include a son, James Earl Fontenot and wife Susan of Macon, GA; her daughters, Ferne LeBlanc and husband Pete of Abbeville, LA, Alma Hilburn of Boerne, TX and Ginger Young and husband Ira of Lafayette, LA; a sister, Marie Louise Burke Turner and husband Billy of Dauphin Island, AL; a son-in-law, Fritz Geers of Cedar Rapids, IA; a sister-in-law, Ruth Breaux of Lafayette; fourteen grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, Earl Howard Fontenot; her parents, LJV and Sophie Prejean Breaux; a daughter, Kathleen Ann Fontenot Geers; her brothers, J Paul Breaux, Louis Joe Breaux, Jr. and Charles Breaux and a sister, Barbara Ann Breaux Scarbrock.
The family requested that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home from 3:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. on Friday, November 13 and continue from 8:00 A.M. Saturday until the time of the services. A recitation of the Rosary will be held there at 8:00 P.M. Friday by Monsignor DeBlanc.
In Church Point since 1930 (married in 1940 at OLSH Church), Mrs. Fontenot graduated from Normal College (now Northwestern La.) and retired in 1975 after twenty-six years as a Home Economics teacher at Church Point High (she taught at Plaucheville High for a year-where she met Earl). She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, La. Retired Teachers Assn, Acadia Parish Retirement Assn, Busy Homemakers of Church Point, Ladies Area Golf, Cajun Pines Golf Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority (teachers) and Silver Pages Book Review Club. Mrs. Fontenot was also American Legion Citizen of the Year 2000, Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, CCD Coordinator for three years, member of Weekly Rosary Group and Monthly Pokeno Group, led a ministry to make and distribute prayer lap blankets, was a Eucharistic volunteer at Acadia-St. Landry Guest Home and was a member of bowling leagues.
The family wishes to extend "special thanks and gratitude" to her sitter, Bernita Jagneaux, and the staffs of Acadia-St. Landry Guest Home and Acadia-St. Landry Hospital and ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Our Mother of Peace School or a charity of one's choice.
