Mrs. Guilbeau, a long-time resident of Church Point, passed away on Saturday, September 26 at the Acadia-St. Landry Guest Home in Church Point. Reverend Patrick Broussard, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the committal services in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery adjacent to the church.
Elvie (and her twin sister, Evie) were born on November 26, 1922 to Joseph S. and Louise Duplechin Venable in Coulee Croche, LA. One of nine children born to the Venables; she grew up in Higginbotham, LA, graduated from Rayne High School and met and married Easton Guilbeau. They were tenant farmers in the Mier/Higginbotham area before eventually moving to New Iberia, LA, where Elvie worked at Levine's Department Store until its closing and at the Port of Iberia until they bought the Blue Moon Dance Hall on Corinne Street there. This was the perfect venue for them as they loved to dance, made hosts of friends and enjoyed great music. Upon their retirement, they moved to Church Point.
Elvie and Easton had no children. She is survived by one sister, Emma Venable (Truman) Childers of Jasper, TX and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Joseph S. and Louise Duplechin Venable and her siblings: Duplex (Doris) Venable, Evie (Walter) Harmon, Anna Mae (Ferdie) Fontenot, Laura (Norbert) Guidry, Saybel (Noel) Montet, Sherry (Barty) Jones and Joseph (Lou Ethel) Venable, Jr. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home from 8:00 AM until the time of services on Saturday. A rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 12:30 PM by Reverend Broussard. Pallbearers will be David Estilette, Ben Carpenter, Chris Venable, Tony Montet, Ricky Venable and Steve Fontenot. Kenneth Fontenot will sing and play at the cemetery. Guidry Funeral Home, 219 N. Broadway St., Church Point, LA is in charge of final arrangements.
