Funeral Services were held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 25, 2007 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point, La. for Earl Howard Fontenot who died at 8:27 A.M., Friday, June 22, 2007 at Acadia-St. Landry Hospital in Church Point, La. Mr. Fontenot was a native of Mamou, La. Father Jefferson J. DeBlanc, pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church will conduct the services . Entombment will be in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Mausoleum; Church Point La.
Survivors include his spouse of 66 years, Evelyn Breaux Fontenot of Church Point, La.; a son, James Earl Fontenot and wife Susan of Macon, Ga.;three daughters: Ferne Leblanc & husband Pete of Abbeville, La., Alma Hilburn of Columbus, Texas & Ginger Young and husband Ira of Lafayette, La. a son-in-law, Fritz Geers of Cedar Rapids Iowa; a brother, Allen Fontenot of New Orleans La.; a sister, Mrs. Vernon (Joy) Ortego of Ville Platte, La.; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
The deceased was preceded in death by his daughter Kay Geers, his parents Fernia and Eliza Reed Fontenot and a brother Bobby Fontenot.
The family requested that visiting hours be observed from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Sunday, June 24 and continue on Monday from 8:00 A.M. until time of services.
An LSU graduate in Agricultural Education, he taught in Plaucheville and Basile before joining the Air Force to serve in World War II. A member of the 20th Air Force, 58th Bomb Wing, he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was a B-29 Bombardier flying "The Hump" in the China-Burma-India Theater and 31 missions over Japan while stationed on Tinian in the Marianas Islands. He flew his last mission on August 14, 1945, the day that Japan surrendered. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and five Bronze Campaign Stars. He will be buried with honors by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Church Point La.
Following the war, he returned to Church Point where he worked as a salesman for the Church Point Wholesale for 34 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church where he was once a member of the choir and served as one of the first lectors under Msgr. C.A. Bienvenu. He was a past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 2504, a member of American Legion Post 225 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9903 of Church Point. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing and playing softball. He also coached American Legion Baseball. He was known for his love of family and his witty one-liners. He loved gardening, and more so, sharing and delivering roses and vegetables to his friends in the community.
Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Sunday by Fr. Jefferson Deblanc.
