Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Donald D. Royer, 67, who passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 3:05 pm at Opelousas General Hospital.

Fr. Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the Mass. Burial will take place in Msgr. C.A. Bienvenu Cemetery - Hwy 35.

Mr. Royer, a resident of Church Point, LA was the son of the late Christopher Royer and the former Elida Lejeune.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara M. Royer of Lafayette, LA; one daughter, Cherie Royer and husband Richard Stokes of Lafayette; one son, Daniel Royer of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Lucinda Royer-Stokes, Christopher Royer, Bianca Royer, Brandy Thibodeaux and Raven Thibodeaux; two great grandchildren, Zane Ezra Royer and Aubrey Menard and two sisters, Dorothy Thibodeaux of Baton Rouge, LA and Berna Richard of Lake Charles, LA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dean Royer; a brother, Larry Royer and a sister, Glennie Cormier.

Donald was Vice President of Project Independence, an Autism awareness group in which he worked very hard to bring awareness to Autism. He was past president of the Harley Owners Group of Lafayette, in which he was a founding member. Mr. Royer was the past president of the Rig Riders and part of the Swamp Scooters Motorcycle Club. He was an active supporter of the MDA. Donald recently retired as a consultant with Shell Oil. He spent over 44 years of his life in the oil industry. Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and a wonderful friend to all he knew and never met a stranger. He will be dearly missed.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm and continue from 8:00 am Saturday until the time of services. A rosary will be recited in the funeral home Friday evening at 7:00 pm.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in Mr. Royer's name to Project Independence. Donations may be made on their website at www.projectindependence.org.
