Obituary

Church Point, LA:           On May 7, 1923, after more than twenty years of marriage, Sosthene and Amenthe Courvelle Smith of the Higginbotham community welcomed their oldest child, Anne, into the world.  Soon she would be followed by a brother Sosthene "Bee" and a sister Amenthe.  As in most Cajun families, the entire neighborhood consisted of aunts, uncles and cousins.  It was from one of these families that Anne met her husband Allie whose father had married her aunt, and they were tenant farmers on land Sosthene owned. In 1938 they were married and in 1942 Allie was drafted into the Army to serve in the European Theater.  When he returned from war, they built a house and started a family near her parents and their relatives. While working for Howell Drug Co as a salesman, Anne convinced him, along with his nephew and wife, Hilman and Sybil Boudreaux, to start a business in Church Point.  At first the Dairy Pride in 1954 was merely an ice cream place, opening from March through October. In 1960, they decided to expand the business to sell sandwiches and plate lunches.  The legendary "Dairy Pride Hamburger" was their specialty and fresh ground beef from "Cabby's" was the key ingredient. Allie pursued other business interests: a farm, cattle raising and a Texaco service station, while Anne took charge of the preparation and cooking at the Dairy Pride. Then in 1968 Allie died suddenly.  At forty-five, Anne became a single mother with the sole responsibility of running a business.  She met the challenge with her usual determination and hard work.  After all, she had convinced two war-hardened soldiers that ice cream was a good enterprise! For over forty years she watched children grow, teenagers hang out, young adults marry.  She laughed at the silly antics and cried at the tragedies that befell our little town. She rejoiced at many celebrations and grieved at more than her share of losses. Just as the Dairy Pride had an unusual beginning, it had an unusual ending. When the lease of the land was denied, she chose to count her blessings and cut her losses by demolishing the building. In retirement, she continued to cook and bake; she learned to knit and crochet; she perfected heirloom sewing and hand quilting; she grew beautiful flowers and traveled to many reunions of Allie's Army buddies.  Simply, she enjoyed life with family and friends. Her last four years brought more challenges, but she approached each with the same determination and spunkiness that ruled her younger life. She loved when young people called her "Mommiee", the name she chose for her grandmother-self, or "the Ice Cream Lady". Anne left this world on October 23, 2018, the way she lived her life: with acceptance, with faith, and with joy. She is survived by her four children:  Evelyn and her husband Gary Smith of Sunset, LA;  Sandra Deshotel of St. Augustine FL;  Vicki and her husband Mike Rose of Crowley, LA; Brent and his wife Tina Rosinski of Higginbotham, LA; six grandchildren:  Allie and her husband Phil Schmitt of Baton Rouge, LA; Amelia Rinehart of Salt Lake City, UT; Adriane and her husband Blayne McRae of Baton Rouge; Jacques Deshotel of Higginbotham;  Allyson and her husband Troy Bayard of Youngsville;  Alexandra Deshotel of St. Augustine; her sister-in-law Bessie Smith of Lafayette and her beloved great grandchildren, Carter and Amelie Schmitt, Raz and Smith McRae and Elise and Thomas Rinehart. She was preceded in death by her husband Allie Boudreaux, her parents Sosthene Smith and the former Amenthe Courvelle, her brother Sosthene "Bee" Smith, her sister Amenthe and brother-in-law Albert Cormier and her son-in-law Carole Deshotel. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 beginning at 9 a.m. followed at 2 p.m. with rosary and Mass by Monsignor Jefferson J. DeBlanc of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church at Guidry Funeral Home in Church Point. She will be laid to rest in The OLSH cemetery next to the church. Pallbearers will be Mike Rose, Phil Schmitt, Troy Bayard, Jacques Deshotel, Blayne McRae and Carter Schmitt.  Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Boudreaux, Al Boudreaux, Gary Smith, Craig Cormier, Raz McRae, Smith McRae, Amelie Schmitt and Elise and Thomas Rinehart.
