Church Point, La. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday, October 6, 2014 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point for Anna Smith, 87, the former Anna Meche, who died Friday, October 3 at Senior Village Nursing home in Opelousas. Monsignor Jefferson J. DeBlanc will conduct the services with interment following in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery on Highway 35 north of Church Point. Musical selections will be performed by Naomi Broussard. Pallbearers will be Jimmy and Ben Smith, Jacob Haley, Josh and Jarred Stanford and Ken Trahan.
Survivors include her daughters, Marie Picou and husband Ralph and Betty Stanford and husband Dale-all of Lafayette; her son, Jimmy Smith and wife Annette of Bristol; six grandchildren: Jacob Haley and wife Cindy of Alexandria, Casey Haley of Boston, Mass., Josh Stanford and wife Paola of Pearland, Tx, Jarred Stanford and wife Kelli of Cypress, Tx, Ben Smith of Lafayette and Ashley Smith and fiancé Tyler Bijeaux of Carencro; seven great-grandchildren: Jackson and Walker Haley of Youngsville, Duke, Bo, Cole and Jack Stanford of Cypress, Sabrina Stanford of Pearland and Klaire Alise Bijeaux of Carencro; two nieces, Kathy Baldridge and husband Don and Linda Jones and husband Kenneth-all of Porter, Tx and a nephew, Kenneth Trahan and wife Paula of Magnolia, Tx.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ernest Smith; her brother, Gilbert Trahan; her mother, Alzema Trahan and her beloved grandmother, Lizida Newman Perrodin.
"Anna was born Sept. 14, 1927 and lived her childhood with her grandmother in Mire. Though life in her early years was poor, her grandmother filled it with love and treasured memories. She married Ernest Smith in 1946 after his discharge from the U.S. Navy and established their home in the Bristol community. Anna loved living in the country; especially cooking, gardening and visiting family and friends."
The family requested that visiting hours be observed from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 5 and continue from 9:00 A.M. Monday until the time of the services. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday by Monsignor DeBlanc.
The family would like to give special thanks to her house sitters, Virgie, Linda and April; the staff at Senior Village Nursing Home and the staff at La. Hospice and Palliative Care of Opelousas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to La. Hospice and Palliative Care.
